The mystery melon was showing signs of deterioration so I plucked it this evening.
She is, indeed, what I know as spanspek - much of the rest of the English speaking world probably calls it cantaloupe or musk melon.
I call it delicious, especially after chilling in the refrigerator.
I can only think the seed came with the horse manure I dug into this area in late March, before I planted the Painted Mountain corn in early April.
There are a couple more melons swelling on vines in the area which is now a bean field.
Who knew that the Winston area folks feed their horses spanspek?
