A Genghis bench

Finally in these scorching dog days of summer, illuminated by Sirius, the Dog Star, the Genghis bench is almost done and will be ready to be used as a seat in the Lizard Lounge soon. It’s only been about seven years a project in pieces in the workshop outback. I’m good at starting things, not so good at finishing them.

Actually only the seat part is my handiwork. All I’ve really done is make a patchwork of interesting woodpile remnants. The structure is Mexican wrought iron which has been rusting quietly under the mesquite tree all these years.

Once upon a time, a long time ago and far away, in another country I found shelter for a while in a house with a Great Dane dog called Genghis and an artist called Ian.

Though I was just passing through that particular paradise (when am I not), that house with those roommates, was still an important way station. We never had to lock our doors. Genghis was a really good guardian of the threshold. He was very big and very black.

This one is for you, Ian in Australia. In memoriam Genghis, and a (somewhat) belated Thankyou for the shelter. Back then. When I needed it.
I haven’t forgotten.
