I have always imagined that a desert hacienda would have hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) out front. Like the dusty little Karoo towns of the old country.

At last there’s a view through hollyhocks at #6thavenueshala.

I’ve been wanting to grow hollyhocks for around fifty years (literally since my teens). I still had to wait all last year for these two plants to go through the growing required. Though I wasn’t sure, as the seedlings came from a farm stall in Hillsboro, it seems these are alcea rosea - the hollyhock variety which only flowers in the second season.

Checking off the to-do-with-a-life list can take patience and persistence.
