Lab Lab (Lablab purpureus) - often known as Hyacinth Bean or Dolichos bean - is regarded as poisonous in the USA, yet widely eaten in tropical places: India, Africa (where it comes from) and Asia.
While I did plant a few of the highly decorative, vigorous climbers primarily for beauty, I decided to cross the line of white people taboo food fetishes.
Using young lablab pods, I made a north Indian cuisine inspired, fragrant coconut milk curry yesterday.
Served over quinoa and brown rice. Delicious!
Bonus: the hacienda smells like India from the spices. Yes, the pods turn green, do not retain that beautiful purple, when cooked.
No ill effects that I can detect.
Viva la vida!
