Prayer paddling: Lyman Lake State Park

Morning prayers

Diamonds on the water, dipping my paddle into Lyman Lake, AZ last month.

I have now paddled (some of) the waters of the Little Colorado.

Apparently Lyman Lake has been damming the Little Colorado since around 1915.

I couldn’t help wondering about all the drowned petroglyphs and ancestral heritage settlement sites for the native peoples Hopi? Ancestral Puebloan? Apache? Navajo? I don’t know enough about who all’s ancestors walked these canyons and this river valley once upon a time. The previous afternoon I spent some mesmerizing hours exploring the above water petroglyph trails in the park.

A rock squirrel watched me from atop a cliff.

The red earth at the put-in and take-out explains the Colorado name.
