An interesting parasite is discovered establishing itself over some areas where malevolence is trying to spread a carpet of thorns in the back forty.

Cuscuta, I presume. Commonly known as dodder. Also devils guts, devil’s hair, angel’s hair, witch’s hair. Take your pick whose side you are on here - common names give plenty of options for affiliation: a shifting signature of all things.
